Introduction emails come in two kinds: introducing yourself to someone, and introducing two people to each other. Both work best when they're short and give the reader a clear reason to reply.

Templates for both are below, along with a simple format you can use for anything that isn't covered.

A simple format for any introduction email

  1. Who you are, in one sentence.
  2. Why you're writing to them specifically.
  3. What you'd like (a call, a meeting, a reply).
  4. A clear, easy next step.

Keep it under 150 words. Put the mutual connection's name in the subject line if you have one. It's the single biggest factor in whether it gets opened.

When someone introduces you

Reply within a day, and move the person who introduced you to BCC so their inbox isn't filled with your scheduling. See how to reply to an introduction email.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write an introduction email?

Say who you are in one line, why you're contacting this person, and what you'd like, then suggest a simple next step. Mention any mutual connection early.

What is a double opt-in introduction?

You ask each person privately whether they want the introduction before you connect them. It's more respectful of busy people's time.

How long should an introduction email be?

Under 150 words. Introductions of two people can be even shorter.
