Resignation letter generator and templates
A resignation letter is a formal record that you're leaving and when your last day is. It doesn't need to explain why, it doesn't need to be long, and it should never be the place to air grievances.
Fill in the generator and it'll write a clean letter you can print, sign or send by email. Prefer to start from a template? There are seven below, and guides for specific situations further down.

What to include in a resignation letter
- A clear statement that you're resigning, and from which position.
- Your last working day, as a date. "Two weeks from today" is ambiguous a month later.
- A short thank-you. One or two sentences.
- An offer to help with the handover.
- Your signature (handwritten if it's printed).
That's it. You don't owe anyone a reason, and the letter goes in your HR file, so keep it neutral. For layout and spacing, see the resignation letter format guide.
Pick the right letter for your situation
- Giving the standard notice: two weeks notice letter
- Leaving without notice: resignation letter effective immediately
- Quitting by email: resignation email
- Keeping it to a few lines: short resignation letter
- Retiring: retirement letter
- Personal or family reasons: resignation for personal reasons
- Teachers: teacher resignation letter

How to hand it in
Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then give them the letter. Finding out from an envelope on the desk or a cold email feels bad, even if you're leaving on good terms.
Send or hand the letter the same day, and copy HR if your company expects it. Keep a copy for yourself. If you're printing it, the envelope guide shows what to write on the front.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a simple resignation letter?
Address your manager, say you're resigning from your job title, give your last day as a date, thank them briefly and offer to help with the handover. Five or six sentences is enough.
Do I have to give a reason for resigning?
No. A reason is optional and many people leave it out. If you do give one, keep it short and positive, like "I've accepted a new role" or "for family reasons".
How much notice should I give?
Two weeks is the norm in the US for most jobs. Check your contract: many roles in the UK, Europe and senior positions require a month or more.
Can I resign by email?
Yes, email is accepted at most companies and gives you a timestamped record. Talk to your manager first, then send the email. See our resignation email templates.
Should I sign my resignation letter?
If it's printed, sign it by hand above your typed name. For an email, your typed name is fine.
