Resignation letter effective immediately
Sometimes two weeks isn't possible. A health problem, a family emergency, an unsafe workplace or a new job that starts Monday. An immediate resignation letter lets you leave cleanly without making it worse.
Keep it short and calm. Apologize for the short notice once, and don't over-explain.

Before you quit on the spot
- Read your contract. Some require notice and can withhold bonuses or charge back training costs if you skip it.
- Check how unused vacation is handled. Some states and countries pay it out, others don't.
- Know your benefits end date. Health insurance often ends on your last day or the end of that month.
- Save anything personal from your work computer before you send the letter. Access is often cut within the hour.
- If the reason is harassment or safety, keep your own copies of any evidence and consider talking to an employment lawyer first. You don't need to put those details in the letter.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to resign effective immediately?
In at-will US jobs it's legal unless your contract says otherwise. It can cost you a reference, so be polite and apologize for the short notice.
Do I have to explain why I'm leaving immediately?
No. "For personal reasons" or "due to health reasons" is enough. You don't need to share details.
Will I still get my final paycheck?
Yes. You must be paid for the hours you worked. Timing depends on your state or country, so check local rules.
