Notice periods differ by country

In the US, two weeks is customary but rarely required by law. In the UK, the legal minimum is one week once you've worked there a month, but most contracts say one to three months. In Australia, the National Employment Standards set one to four weeks based on length of service, and many awards and contracts say more. Always follow your contract.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good example of a resignation letter?

A good one states your resignation and last day in the first sentence, thanks your employer in one or two lines, and offers specific help with the handover.

Should I mention my new employer?

You can, but it's not required. Many people just say they've accepted a new role.
