Retirement letter templates
A retirement letter is a resignation letter with a different tone. You're not moving to a competitor, you're finishing a career, so it's fine to be warmer and look back a little.
Give more notice than usual if you can. Two to three months is common for retirements, and it gives your employer time to plan.

Before you send it
Check your pension, 401(k) or retirement plan rules first. Your last day can affect when benefits start, whether you get a bonus for the year, and how unused leave is paid out. HR can usually tell you the best date to pick.
Frequently asked questions
How much notice should I give for retirement?
Two to three months is common and appreciated, more for senior roles. The minimum is whatever your contract says.
Is a retirement letter the same as a resignation letter?
It does the same job (formal notice and a last day), but it usually says you're retiring and is a little warmer.
