Two weeks notice letter templates

Updated October 2026 · Free to copy and edit

Two weeks is the standard notice in most US jobs. A two weeks notice letter just puts it in writing: you're leaving, and here is your last day.

Count 14 calendar days from the day you hand it in. If you resign on Monday, March 2, your last day is usually Friday, March 13, the end of the second working week. Write that date in the letter so nobody has to do the maths.

What happens after you hand it in

Your manager may accept your notice and keep you working, or they may tell you to leave early. Some companies pay out the remaining two weeks, some don't. In most US states (at-will employment) both are legal, so have a little savings ready just in case.

They may also make a counter-offer. Decide before the conversation whether anything would make you stay. If not, thank them and say your decision is final.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a two weeks notice letter?

Say you're resigning, name your position, give your last day as a specific date two weeks out, thank your employer briefly and offer to help with the transition.

Do two weeks include weekends?

Two weeks means 14 calendar days, which usually equals 10 working days. Your last day is normally the last working day before those 14 days run out.

Is two weeks notice required by law?

In the US, generally no. It's a professional courtesy, and some contracts require it. Outside the US, notice periods are often set by law or contract and can be longer.

Can I give two weeks notice by text?

It's better not to. Use email or a printed letter so there's a clear record, and talk to your manager first.
